About the exhibition ‘Icons’
Handmade animal and human figurines, made from clay, have been with us since as early as 24,000 BC. From the earliest times, we have been making things out of readily available mud. It feels good to work and can be fired in an open fire.
It is the simplicity and raw nature of clay that attracts me to this medium.
The pieces on display are all individually hand-rolled earthenware clay pieces and are glazed and kiln-fired to over 1000 degrees Celsius at my home studio in Kingsford, NSW. Great stories like Australia’s Ned Kelly story, the legendary ANZACs, the pearl divers from the north-west of Australia and Australia’s iconic animals lure me in with their, dramatic nature. Further afield, the Terracotta Army and its narrative have inspired the Qin Dynasty pieces.
Although I primarily work with clay, I hold a Master of Art in Photomedia and have more recently expanded my artistic mediums to include video and photography. The National Gallery of Australia (NGA), Canberra, has sold my work through their gift shop. Where I developed a special range of merchandise for the NGA’s “Book of Kells” exhibition. In the past, my work has been exhibited at a number of shows and galleries. I have exhibited in a group exhibition of Celtic Art at the Mosman Community Art Gallery and have exhibited a video work and some photographic prints through Annandale Galleries in 2015.
I hope you like my Australian handmade art pieces.
